Hey all. I have been using Solidworks for years, but have just recently ventured into the simulation part of it. I have a potential project coming up, working with a friend to design and put through simulations a Vertical Axix Wind Turbine.

What I need to know, is can Solidworks simulate magnets? Specifically neodymium magnets if that matters, I am  toying with the idea of zero friction. The second thing is, can I simulate how much wind force is need to start the blades turning. I have a few different blade design ideas and want to compare their performance.

As far as I know Solidworks doesn't support magnetic fields currently. The only option I know of is http://www.prweb.com/releases/2014/01/prweb11519859.htm Which is an add-on. You could try using http://www.femm.info/wiki/HomePage, not sure if it will give you the information your looking for though. There are some workarounds but I wouldn't trust the simulation as you would pretty much be faking things and it wouldn't be an accurate simulation. Maybe someone else here knows of an accurate way.....

That looks like a great plugin, I will have to look further into it after they release it. Thx

For the wind simulation, check out SolidWorks Flow Simulation

Hello friend
during 2004~2005 Solid works engaged to the add in utility for magnetic field simulation, its name was CosmosEM, as far as the magnetic field doesn't developed by solid works team in its new platform with the new name "Simulations" so already you cant do this kind of simulations by solid works ,
But:
be informed its need deeply knowledge of electromagnetic science to establishing the magnetic simulation in each platform you want to do! I recommend you to make a consultant with the Elertro magnetic engineers for your project. also you can evaluate the EM Works :
https://www.emworks.com/application/categories/academic/educational-examples

for CFD simulations you can use both Flow simulation utility of the solid works and the Ansys\fluent, but the parameters you are looking for is related to both Static and dynamic behavior of the machine and the wind force calculations you can easily calculate by handy calculations and no need to CFD simulations!
Good luck
